The Jesuit Center is historically significant for its architecture, landscape, and gardens. Sited on a lofty hill with sweeping vistas, lush lawns, and wooded areas, the complex is the work of leading early-twentieth-century designers; it is a hallmark example of the American Country Estate style.

JMA prepared a comprehensive planning study of the site’s buildings and landscape. The project goals were to examine existing conditions and develop recommendations that reinforced historic character, accommodated change, and created a decision-making framework for the Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus. A multidisciplinary team conducted an in-depth evaluation of existing conditions and historic integrity for the 251-acre landscape and 150,000-square-foot Novitiate Building. The focus of the assessment included the site and landscape, architecture, structure, mechanical and electrical systems, life safety, and materials conservation, as well as deterioration, maintenance practices, and repairs. The result, a prioritized preservation program, detailed recommendations for work that will preserve and sustain the Jesuit Center into the future.

JMA was subsequently engaged to conduct a program planning study for the Novitiate Building that examined the needs of the resident Jesuits and the Center for Spiritual Growth retreat center. Using a workshop format, JMA guided focus groups through program development and context-sensitive conceptual design. The project results included measured drawings, a model, architectural concept design plans, and cost estimates.
