Constructed during the early-twentieth-century scientific agricultural movement at Nemours, the estate of Alfred I. du Pont in northern Delaware, the Blue Ball Dairy Barn’s fireproof concrete construction was designed to enhance sanitation and fire safety. The complex has been restored as the centerpiece of a new state park and adapted for use as a visitor center with museum and event space. Undertaken in collaboration with Wallace, Roberts & Todd, JMA was the architect for the historic dairy barn rehabilitation.

The project incorporated green building techniques for energy efficiency. A LEED® Silver rating is anticipated, and the project has received a Preservation Achievement Award from the Preservation Alliance of Greater Philadelphia, Honor Awards for Design from AIA Philadelphia and AIA Delaware (along with its Earth Day Award for Sustainable Design), and an Honorable Mention Award from Preservation Delaware.

JMA was also responsible for preservation aspects of the park master plan which preceded the restoration, including historical and archeological investigations, participation in public workshops, preparation of a preliminary stabilization plan for the barn, and development of the final preservation strategy for the historic structures.
