JMA has prepared plans for 11 colleges and universities, supported by Getty Foundation campus heritage grants, seeking to manage and preserve the integrity of their historic resources. Campus heritage plans are flexible guides for informing good decision-making, not rigid rule books, and are important components of strategic planning and sustainable development which complement more traditional campus master plans.
JMA has an extensive record of achievement in assisting colleges and universities address the challenges of implementing change in their historic campus settings. Through a process of inventorying and assessing significant buildings and landscapes as they have developed over time, identifying their character-defining features or elements, and reviewing existing conditions, these campus heritage plans provide planners, maintenance personnel, and trustees with a ready reference and technical resources for understanding the degree to which change can be accommodated without sacrificing the significant values and principles of the buildings and landscapes that are a source of each institution’s cultural identity. The plans offer treatment recommendations with guidelines for future development and maintenance standards based on “best practices.”
