The Bishop, Dean, and Chapter of Christ Church Cathedral

Having first prepared a historic fabric report and master plan study for Louisville’s oldest house of worship (1824), JMA provided full architectural services for a 6.6-million-dollar program of construction that was implemented in four phases over seven years. Phase 1 comprised the rehabilitation and adaptive reuse of the Diocesan House; Phase 2, the construction of a new exterior cloister and landscaped garden; Phase 3, the restoration and rehabilitation of the Cathedral; and Phase 4, the renovation of Deans’ Hall. These projects included the restoration of wood windows, box gutters and cornices, and the steeple roof and lantern; replacement of inadequate interior floor structures to maximize the reuse of existing building volume for offices, meeting rooms, and educational space; provision of accessible facilities; reorganization of interior and exterior circulation around the garden as a focal point; and transformation of the cathedral interior to meet current liturgical requirements while retaining significant historic fabric.
